Immunologist of the Month

Every month we will feature a new interview with an Immunologist. These Immunologists are at the cutting-edge of research and education, they have kindly offered to give us their time and insight into their research and studies.


December 2018

Our December Immunologist of the month is Nashied Peton from the University of Cape Town (UCT), South Africa. Dr Peton is an early career research scientist based at the Wellcome Centre for Clinical Infectious Diseases Research Initiative (CIDRI-Africa), UCT.

The Immunopaedia team conducted a written interview about Dr Nashied Peton, highlighting his research interests and transition from PhD graduate to early career research fellow.

November 2018

Our Immunologist of the month is María Moreno, an Assistant Professor at Universidad de la República, Montevideo-Uruguay. Her research focuses is in the development of new immunotherapies based on the use of attenuated Salmonella to treat cancer.

Mariana Rivera, one of the Immunopaedia Ambassadors conducted a written interview of Ass. Prof. Moreno focusing on immunotherapies for cancer, and the research she conducts in this field.

October 2018

Our October Immunologist of the month is Olivier Boyer, one of Immunopaedia’s Steering Committee Members. Olivier Boyer is a Professor of Immunology, currently based at the Rouen University Hospital – France.

The Immunopaedia team conducted a video interview of Prof. Boyer, focusing on why he decided to be a Clinician Scientist,his research focus and his contributions to Immunopaedia Case Studies.

September 2018

Our September Immunologist of the Month is Dr. Pierre Van Damme. Dr Van Damme is a full professor at the University of Antwerp, Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences. He chairs the Vaccine & Infectious Disease Institute (VAXINFECTIO, University of Antwerp), a consortium of four research units within the university: the Laboratory of Medical Microbiology (LMM), the Laboratory of Experimental Hematology (LEH), the Centre for the Evaluation of Vaccination (CEV) and the Centre for Health Economic Research and Infectious Disease Modelling (CHERMID). It is recognized as ‘Centre of Excellence’ of the University of Antwerp and functions as WHO Collaborating Centre for the WHO European Region for the control and prevention of infectious diseases. During the Vaccinology Summer School hosted by the CEV, University of Antwerp in Belgium, we had the opportunity of interview him and discuss his work and current projects, as well as what he considers a solution against vaccine hesitancy.

August 2018

Our August Immunologist of the Month is Jean-Marc Cavaillon, Proffessor at Institut Pasteur  in Paris, France. Prof. Jean-Marc Cavaillon has extensive expertise on cytokines, inflammation, and innate immunity.  He is also an expert on bacterial endotoxins; interested in the induction of interleukin-1 and other inflammatory cytokines by lipopolysaccharides. He initiated his biomedical research some twenty years ago, particularly in the field of sepsis and systemic inflammation.  Prof. Jean-Marc Cavaillon has published 168 scientific articles, over 96 reviews and 56 chapters in books on infection, innate immunity and septic shock.

July 2018

Dr Paul Kincade (source: The American Society of Immunologists, Paul W. Kincade Profile)

Our July Immunologist of the Month is Paul W. Kincade,  Scientific Director of the Oklahoma Centre for Adult Stem Cell Research. His research area is understanding early fetal and adult developmental stages of the lymphoid differentiation pathway.

The Immunopaedia team conducted a special interview focusing on advice for young immunology scientists, as Dr. Kincade expressed a special interest in training and career development.

June 2018

Our June Immunologist Month is Manuel Antonio Franco, a Full Professor at the Pontificia Universidad de Javeriana (PUJ) in Bogota, Colombia. His research area is understanding mucosal immunology with a special focus on rotavirus.

Professor Franco kindly agreed to be interview by the Immunopaedia about his research, challenges he has faced and advice for young researchers.

May 2018

Our May Immunologist Month is Dr Pascale Kropf an Associate Professor at Imperial College London in the UK and an Honorary Member of the University of Gondar in Ethiopia. Her research is focused on immunity to leishmaniasis and she also has many educational interests.

Associate Professor Kropf spoke to the Immunopaedia team about her research, as well shared some advice and highlighted to importance of cross-border research.

April 2018

Our April Immunologist of the month is Luis Fernando García is Emeritus Professor at the Universidad de Antioquia (UdeA) in Medellín, Colombia. Professor García founded the Research group of Inmunología Celular e Inmunogenética (GICIC) in UdeA and  has experience in understanding immune responses to Tuberculosis infection and transplantation immunology.

Professor García spoke to the Immunopaedia team about his research interests, as well as shared some valuable advice.

March 2018

Our March Immunologist of the month in Professor Stanley Plotkin, a world-renowned vaccinologist  and an influential figure in the field of infectious diseases. Professor Plotkin is currently an Emeritus Professor of the University of Pennsylvania, and Adjunct Professor of the Johns Hopkins University.

The Immunopaedia team was very honoured to interview Professor Stanley Plotkin, who kindly accepted to be interviewed via skype.

February 2018

Our February Immunologist of the Month is Sarah Gilbert, faculty member at the Jenner Institute in the University of Oxford. Gilbert has co-founded Vaccitech, a collaborative vaccine development spin-out company from Oxford, which performs clinical vaccine programs for influenza, cancer, and other emerging pathogens.

Sarah recently spoke to the Immunopaedia team about her research interest in the field of Vaccinology.

January 2018

Jacqueline Marvel

Our January Immunologist of the Month is Jacqueline Marvel, Research Director of the French National Center for Scientific Research (CNRS) and head of the “Immunity and Cytotoxic Lymphocytes” team at the International Center of Infectiology Research (CIRI).

Jacqueline recently spoke to the Immunopaedia team about her immunological T cell memory, with particular focus on cytotoxic CD8 T cells.
