Wendy Burgers (idm.uct.ac.za)

Dr Wendy Burgers is an Associate Professor in the Division of Medical Virology and a full member of the Institute of Infectious Diseases and Molecular Medicine at the University of Cape Town.

Dr Burgers’ research group focuses on studying HIV-TB co-infection. Particularly, how HIV affects the immune response to Mycobacterium tuberculosis in HIV-TB co-infected individuals, both in blood and in the lungs. The group also studies the immunology of HIV pathogenesis, investigating the interplay between the virus and the immune system early after infection and how these insights may be applied to an HIV vaccine.

Dr Burgers’ spoke to Immunopaedia about general virus and specific HIV immune evasion and the development of a HIV vaccine.
