Coeliac disease is a complex autoimmune condition which currently affects around 1 in 100 people worldwide. Due to its complexity, the diagnosis of this condition poses unique challenges and patients often face delayed treatment, particularly for those with mild pathology. Currently, serological and histological testing is used in the diagnosis of coeliac disease, although both these techniques have significant drawbacks. In this review, the current diagnostics for coeliac disease are discussed and novel diagnostics under investigation are also outlined. Finally improvements to the current protocols are discussed with the need for a more holistic diagnostic pathway for the condition using a number of metrics simultaneously.
