Antiretroviral therapy usually results in a decrease in viral load and an increase in CD4 cell count. However 20-40% of patients have what is termed a discordant response which means that either their viral load becomes undetectable but CD4 cell count does not increase or vice versa. A study was conducted to see if patients with a discordant response have an increased risk of experiencing HIV disease progression or death and if there is a group of patients who are more likely to experience this response than other patients.
