A recent market research survey was conducted regarding patient preference for the tablet formulation of ritonavir-boosted lopinavir (LPV/r; Kaletra??) over the soft gel capsule (SGC) formulation. It is believed that the more tolerable and convenient a medication becomes, the greater patient compliance and adherence becomes. Increased patient satisfaction for the tablet formulation of the protease inhibitor included less of a pill burden because patients take less pills less often, the medication requires no refrigeration and there are no dietary restrictions. Furthermore, self-reported adherence to treatment was increased, gastrointestinal side effects were reduced and overall the respondents preferred the tablet formulation.
