Serum lipid profiles among patients initiating ritonavir-boosted atazanavir versus efavirenz-based regimens

A prospective cohort study was designed to compare the effects of boosted and unboosted atazanavir with efavirenz on serum lipids profiles because antiretrovirals have the potential to increase lipid profiles and thus the risk of cardiovascular disease.

Cohorts of HIV infected individuals were included in the study with 380 patients on efavirenz and 281 on atazanavir.  Participants had pre and post initiation lipid levels measured. Multivariate linear regression was conducted to estimate adjusted mean differences between treatment groups for high density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-c), non-HDL-c, and log total cholesterol (TC) to HDL-c ratio outcomes.

Results showed that both efavirenz and atazanavir- based regimens had similar beneficial declines in TC/HDL ratio.
