The Children with HIV Antibiotic Prophylaxis (CHAP) trial which initially reported results in 2004 demonstrated that cotrimoxazole prophylaxis reduced hospitalisations and reduced the risk of death in children aged one to 14 years by 43%.  It was later shown that this was attributed to a reduction of serious bacterial lung infections and not PCP pneumonia as was assumed.
